71st annual Turkey Carnival Saturday

The Odessa Lions Club’s 71st annual Turkey Carnival is coming this weekend, on Saturday, November 17 to be exact. Club members have been out selling tickets for the more than 50 prizes donated by local businesses and individuals. The top prize is a $500 credit to be used at any Odessa business, donated by the Lions Club itself. See sidebar for complete list of prizes.

The Lions Club has a long history in Odessa, as well as in other towns in the area. Some of their projects over the years have included improvements to Reiman Park, purchase of the Festplatz and ongoing efforts to install permanent facilities (including the permanent outdoor stage built just prior to Fest this year), improvements to the Odessa Cemetery and enhancement of the Tourist Park.

The Turkey Carnival has long been an event looked forward to by the town’s young and old alike. Bingo for frozen turkeys is the main draw, in addition to the raffle for prizes. Tickets are drawn throughout the day and evening for the many items donated by the Odessa community. Winners need not be present when their names are drawn. Lions Club members will contact all winners not present.

The community center will open at noon, selling hamburgers, chips, coffee and soft drinks, plus pie slices for dessert. Bingo will begin whenever there are enough participants to warrant it. At press time, the jury was still out regarding whether or not there would be a dice game later in the day.

Lions Club members are hoping for a good crowd, as the Turkey Carnival is one of their biggest fundraisers of the year. Proceeds will fund several of their projects.

For 70 years, Odessa has enjoyed the efforts of the Lions Club to put on a fun event and raise money for needed civic improvements. The school’s fall sports season is over, so members are hoping for a good hometown crowd to make a day of food, bingo and visiting with friends and neighbors.
