The Odessa-Harrington Titan girls volleyball team took 6th place at the state tournament held in Yakima’s Sun Dome Friday and Saturday, November 9 and 10.
The Titans first game was played at 8 a.m. on Friday against Pateros. After a slow start, the team from O-H came to life and handily defeated Pateros in three straight, 25-23, 25-14 and 25-18.
After each match, one player from each team was awarded a sportsmanship medal. Freshman Casey Schlomer won for the Titans in their first match against Pateros for coming in and serving well when many of the starters were troubled by serves into the net.
Later the same day, the Titans faced number-one ranked Tekoa-Oakesdale. Although T-O made its own share of mistakes, it was still able to dominate the Titans, taking three straight, 25-6, 25-13 and 25-14. O-H appeared to be mentally unprepared for the game, and their lack of focus led to all kinds of poorly hit balls. They did as much to defeat themselves as their opponents did.
Katelyn Worley received the sportsmanship medal in this match for coming off the bench and making some key plays.
Moving into the losers’ bracket, Odessa-Harrington faced Three Rivers Christian of Kelso, Wash. on Saturday morning. This game was another easy win for them, as they took three straight, 25-9, 25-16 and 25-9, and moved into the trophy round.
Chelsea Fisher received the sportsmanship medal for this game.
In the match for fifth and sixth places, O-H faced their fellow league members, Wilbur-Creston. The two teams battled several times during the regular season and playoffs, with sometimes O-H and sometimes W-C getting the upper hand. This match was no different. It was a hard-fought battle between two well-matched teams. Wilbur-Creston came out on top in this one, three games to one, 27-25, 21-25, 25-18 and 25-18, to take the fifth-place trophy.
Individual highlights for the Titans were a tournament-high 49 kills for Chelsea Fisher over the course of four matches. Lexie Hirst had the highest percentage of successful serves with 83%. Koralynne Kuch had 103 assists. Leading in aces were Fisher with 9, Jordyn Tanke 7 and Kendall Todd 6. Hannah Schmidt led with 35 digs, and Cydnee Kieffer had 31. Kendall Todd had 17 blocks, and Fisher added another 10. Successfully receiving the serve 94% of the time was Jordyn Tanke.
