"Read Across America"

“Read Across America,” a program of the National Education Association, was celebrated by the Odessa School District Monday, March 4. The celebration coincides with the birthday of Theodor Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss, born March 2. Most schools celebrated the event last Friday, but Odessa schools were closed for the state basketball tournament, the local celebration was hold Monday.

High school seniors read books to elementary students, and all day students wore hats to represent the many hats Dr. Seuss wore as he pursued different careers. Also, it recognizes the 75th anniversary of the book “The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins.”

Teachers passed out two free books to each child from “Success by Six” of Spokane, a program promoted by The United Way to help young children have access to books.

Students also enjoyed Dr. Seuss cupcakes and participated in a writing activity with a Titan buddy from a higher grade level. The topic was, “Why I chose the hat I am wearing today.”
