Odessa students Wyatt Haase, Lukas Marshall and Colby Sooy came home with bragging rights, as they grabbed the #1 spot at the Zillah Robotics Challenge.
Last week Thursday, March 21, 11 youngsters from Odessa’s junior-high grades traveled to Zillah to participate in the challenge. Approximately 20 schools and home-school groups sent a total of 38 teams to the competition.
The Odessa group broke out into four different teams: The Odessa Titans, comprising Aaron Gies, Cole Kissler and Colton Melgren; The Other Boys, comprising Wyatt Haase, Lukas Marshall and Colby Sooy; The Odessa Ligers, comprising John DeWulf and Chance Messer; and The Other Girls, comprising Zoe Clark, Rebecca Fortner and Keisha McNeil.
The object of the challenge was to program a robot, then guide it through a maze using the light from a flashlight. The team getting through the maze in the fastest cumulative time during three of four attempts was the winner.
The other Odessa teams also did very well overall, with The Odessa Titans coming in seventh, The Other Girls coming in 16th and The Odessa Ligers coming in 17th.
Science teacher Seth Hodges was pleased with the results and surprised at how well the Odessa contingent did for their first time attending such a competition.
