Criminal Sentencings
Nathaniel Dale Pierce, 30, of Medical Lake, entered an Alford plea of guilt on June 11 to a charge of attempting to elude a police vehicle in connection with an Aug. 31, 2012, pursuit by Reardan Police after he failed to stop for students in a school crosswalk. After a traffic stop was attempted, the defendant’s vehicle traveled at high speeds to Medical Lake, where the pursuit ended with assistance from the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office. His sentence includes 70 days jail (all credited as served), $1,621.37 restitution to a Medical Lake resident and $1,050 court costs. After his attorney, Dennis Morgan, withdrew from the case in May, saying his client “consistently resisted my ability to properly defend him,” “was unwilling to communicate with me concerning his case,” and had filed a complaint against him (later declined) with the state Bar Association, Pierce represented himself and was found mentally competent after an examination at Eastern State Hospital.
Roger Dean Lewis, 45, of Spokane, pleaded guilty June 12 to two counts of residential burglary (amended through a second round of plea negotiations from four counts of second-degree burglary, three counts of first-degree theft and one count of theft of a motor vehicle). His sentence includes almost 37 months in a prison-based drug offender treatment program, $800 court costs and restitution to be determined. He must undergo a drug and alcohol evaluation and possess no firearms. In his plea statement, he wrote, “While I do not feel I am guilty of this crime, I agree there is sufficient evidence that a jury could convict me of higher or more crimes, so I plead guilty to take advantage of a plea agreement.” The case involved the taking of two 4-wheel cycles and a Honda Civic from property in the Sprague area in February.
