Titan football team loses by powerhouse to Neah Bay

On Friday, September 13, what was supposed to be a bye week for Odessa-Harrington became instead a matchup with the 1B team from Neah Bay, which handed the Titans their second straight loss, 64-12.

NB 16 28 14 6 64

O-H 6 6 0 0 12

In the first quarter, Neah Bay scored first on a 2-yard run, followed by two extra points on a pass play. O-H responded with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Sam Schafer to Dakota Largent. The extra-point attempt was no good. NB struck back with an 80-yard kick return for a TD. The extra-point pass play was good.

In the second quarter, NB poured it on even more, scoring first on a 1-yard run and running the ball again for the extra two points. NB scored next on a 21-yard run, but the O-H defense was able to stop the extra-point attempt. NB then scored on a 15-yard run, but the extra-point passing attempt was no good.

O-H completed a 45-yard pass from Sam Schafer to Carsen Weber for a TD but again the extra-point attempt on the ground was stopped.

NB closed out the first-half scoring with a 70-yard kick return for a TD, followed by a successful pass play for two more points.

After halftime, the game belonged to NB, although the Titans put up a good struggle defensively. NB scored on a 15-yard pass play and then on an 8-yard running play, with both extra-point attempts succeeding on the ground. In the fourth quarter, NB scored once on a 10-yard run, but the extra-point attempt was no good.

Offensively, Carsen Weber had two receptions for 85 yards receiving. Dakota Largent also had two receptions for 30 yards receiving. Steven Braun totaled 150 yards on kick returns.

Defensively, Carsen Weber had 8 tackles, Jacob DeWulf 5, Sam Schafer 5, Dillon Dennison 8 and Steven Braun 4.

Jacob Montgomery of Harrington suffered a knee injury but the severity will not be known until after an MRI is performed.

Coach Bruce Todd said he felt the team did some things well but still need to work on improving in many aspects. Their main weakness, he said is that they are young and inexperienced. He added that there was no particular turning point in the game, “They were just bigger, faster, stronger and more experienced.”

Todd said Neah Bay had size, strength, speed and experience, having played in the state 1B tournament the past two years (finishing first in 2011 and second in 2012), with the majority of their team members playing in both championship games.

“Neah Bay is probably one of the top teams in the state if not the top team in the state. I predict them to win the championship again this year as long as they can stay healthy all season long,” Todd said.
