Football team fights for close win over Pateros

Last Friday afternoon in Harrington, the Titans football team defeated Pateros to even its season record at 2-2. It was a close, exciting game.

The Titans scored first on a 10-yard pass to Carsen Weber from quarterback Sam Schafer. The two-point conversion was good on a quarterback keeper.

Pateros then answered with a 40-yard pass play for a TD, plus another successful pass for the two extra points.

The Schafer/Weber duo struck again, this time on a 45-yard pass play. The extra-point attempt on the ground was not successful.

In the second quarter, Pateros struck first on a 15-yard pass, followed by an unsuccessful two-point conversion attempt.

The Titans responded as Dakota Largent caught a 20-yard pass from Schafer for the TD, but again, the extra-point attempt failed.

Pateros scored then on a 5-yard run, followed by a successful two-point conversion run in by the quarterback.

The teams went into their respective locker rooms at half time with the scored tied at 20-20.

Schafer opened the scoring in the third quarter with a 45-yard run into the endzone. The extra-point attempt failed.

Pateros responded on a five-yard running play, followed by a quarterback keeper for the two-point conversion.

Weber gained 65 yards, hauling in another pass from Schafer for the TD. A second pass attempt for two more was unsuccessful.

Third-quarter scoring ended with Paterous marching downfield and scoring on a 5-yard run followed by a successful two-point conversion.

In the fourth quarter, Pateros struck first, scoring on a 20-yard pass play, but the extra-point attempt was no good.

O-H responded with a 35-yard pass play from Schafer to Weber, followed by Schafer running in the two-point conversion. The Titans were able to defend and get the ball back, as Schafer streaked for a 60-run to the endzone. The two-point conversion came on a pass from Schafer to Weber.

Pateros got one more TD from 2 yards out to give them the lead, but this time their extra-point attempt was no good.

The Titans, with only 30 seconds remaining in the game were able to score again, with Weber catching the pass from Schafer for 8 yards and a TD. Schafer then ran the ball for the two-point conversion and the win.

Schafer had 267 yards rushing and 211 yards passing. He had 10/18 attempts with two interceptions. Weber had 9 catches for 176 yards receiving and Largent had 2 catches for 35 yds receiving.

On defense, Weber had 11 tackles and 1 interception; Jacob DeWulf 12 tackles, 2 sacks, and 1 caused fumble; Schafer 15 tackles; Largent 4 tackles and 1 interception; Dillon Dennison 10 tackles; Max Greenwalt 4 tackles; Caleb Behrens 3 tackles; Steven Braun 3 tackles and Nathyn Winslow 2 tackles.

“We had a little more speed than our opponent, [but] Pateros was much bigger and more powerful than us,” said coach Bruce Todd. “We had some turnovers that helped keep them in the game. Our speed helped us win. If they would have kept with their ground game and pounded it at us and controlled the clock more, there may have been a different outcome.”
