New Year is Celebrated in Style with "Casino Night"

New Year's Eve in Odessa saw folks drawn downtown to ring in 2014. Both Chiefs Bar & Grill and Any Occasion Banquet Hall were open for revelers wanting to celebrate the holiday.

The Odessa Chamber of Commerce sponsored a community event envisioned as a thank you to all of the volunteers who make Odessa such a great place to live, work and play by supporting the many activities that take place all year long.

The theme of the event was "A Night at the Casino." Following a social hour and brief Chamber business meeting between 8 and 9 p.m., the festivities began. The staff from Chiefs Bar & Grill did double duty, manning the no-host bar at Any Occasion in addition to operating the bar and restaurant at their own establishment.

The venue at Any Occasion was divided into two parts, with gaming tables set up in one half of the area and a band and dance floor occupying the other half. The Garland Kings from Spokane provided the evening's music. Any entry fee on only $10 per person was collected at the door to help defray some of the cost of food and entertainment, but the bulk of the expenses were picked up by the Odessa Chamber in appreciation of the contributions made by the town's many volunteers. In exchange, the volunteers got music, snack foods and chips to use at the "Casino."

Over the weeks leading up to December 31, the planning committee for the event solicited nominations for awards to be presented during the New Year's celebration. Instead of selecting a business and person of the year, the committee this year came up with five categories. The categories (and their winners) were: Business of the Year – Odessa Drug, Volunteer of the Year – Justin Parr, First Responder of the Year – Marcus Horak, Teacher of the Year – Terri King and Student of the Year – Thorsen Wehr.

For guests who were uninterested in the gaming tables, a drawing was held for a door prize. Kerry Scheller was the winner of a Blu-Ray DVD player. The guests at the gaming tables used their wits and called on Lady Luck for help, hoping to amass enough chips to win one of two additional prizes. The night's big winner was Jim Boss who had the most chips and went home with a handheld electronic tablet. Coming in ssecond was Julie Williams who won a Keurig single-cup coffeemaker.

Any Occasion proprietress Michelle Melgren said that 85 people attended the festivities.
