Serving Lincoln County for more than a century!

Odessa's Heritage Church social hall, located in its basement with plenty of tables and chairs available, as well as good lighting, was the site for the Odessa Quilt Club's 19th annual Quilt 'til You Wilt event Monday, March 17. Quilters came (107 of them officially registered) from Odessa and points all around it in a circle stretching out to Seattle, Royal City, the Tri-Cities, Spokane and Omak. Four visitors also stopped in to visit with friends or to see what was going on. And, yes, since it was St. Patrick's Day, there was plenty of green to be seen.
Each quilter brought her own machine, iron and projects to work on. Throughout the day, various volunteers offered demonstrations of techniques they had learned and wanted to share. At other times, individuals would come forward to share an experience or a specific project that had turned out especially well. More than 40 items were shown during these 'show-and-tell' sessions.
Among the attendees, levels of experience varied from beginners to those who had been pursuing the avocation most or all of their adult lives. Beginners and old hands alike took part in all aspects of the day's shared activities. It was an old-fashioned quilting bee seen in the context of modern electronic sewing machines and electric irons.
Another fun aspect of Monday's get-together was a game called "Layer Cake Recipe" that involved trading 10-inch fabric squares. It ran for most of the day.
As always at Quilt 'til You Wilt, the day began at 6 a.m., when quilt club members began setting up, and ran until about 10:30 p.m., when the clean-up crew finished their duties and headed for home.
The attendees all brought enough food for both a potluck lunch and dinner, and everything was available, from soups and salads to main dishes and desserts, almost all of it homemade.
Odessa Quilt Club members say they have nearly outgrown the Heritage Church location, but they have found no other space available with such good lighting.
The club's next big event is the quilt show to be held during Spring Fling on April 25 and 26 in the gymnasium at Odessa High School.
