Near COULEE CITY, Wash. Mar. 31, 2014 – An 8-year-old Ephrata boy, Korey Kolves, has died after a car he was in with one adult and two other children went into a canal near Summer Falls Dam south of Coulee City. The man with them in the vehicle, Scott Kolves, age 45 and also of Ephrata is still missing.
Around 3:25 p.m. March 30, emergency responders were called to the Summer Falls Dam, about seven miles south of Coulee City. Bystanders fishing nearby said they saw the vehicle go into the canal and all four occupants exited the vehicle into the water. The bystanders were able to pull two of the three children out of the canal. Emergency responders arrived and were able to pull the third child, Korey Kolves, from the water, but could not locate Scott Kolves. All three children were taken to Samaritan Hospital in Moses Lake where Korey later died. The other two children were transported with non-life threatening injuries.
Grant County Search and Rescue Unit, Grant County Fire District 5, and Moses Lake Fire Department search and rescue divers searched the canal but had to suspend the search at sundown. The search resumed again this morning.
“This is a heartbreaking and tragic loss," said Grant County Sheriff Tom Jones. "In addition to our search and rescue divers, we had responders from Grant County Fire District 12, Washington State Patrol, American Medical Response, and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Our sincerest condolences to the family during this extremely difficult time."
