Science students place first/ second at state science fair

Four students from Odessa High School’s Advanced STEM Research (ASR) laboratory presented their science projects on April 4-5, 2014 in Bremerton at the 57th annual Washington State Science and Engineering Fair. Students compete within 17 categories. After a grueling day of questioning, the Odessa ASR researchers were recognized with the following awards:

Alexa Boss, in the category Medicine and Health, presented her project entitled, “Analyzing Retinal Vascular Tortuosity in Fundus Photography as an Indicator for Health.”

She was awarded first place in Medicine and Health, receiving a trophy, certificate and ribbon, as well a Bremerton Lions Club Scholarship for $1000 and an accompanying certificate).

Thorsen Wehr, in Physics and Astronomy, presented his project with the title, “The Generation and Analysis of Sound Waves with Varying Nonlinearity”

He was awarded first place in Physics and Astronomy, receiving a trophy, certificate and ribbon; the Ohio Wesleyan University Foundation Award for $80,000 scholarship to attend OWU; the Wolfram Mathematica Award consisting of math software and a certificate and a WSU scholarship for $8,000 plus a certificate and gift bag); and the YALE Science and Engineering Outstanding Research Award consisting of a certificate and medallion).

Stacia Lesser competed in the Behavioral Sciences category and presented a project called “Transgene Interleukin-37b Aiding Memory Consolidation Due to Sleep Disruption.”

She was awarded second place in Behavioral Sciences, receiving a certificate and ribbon).

Elizabeth Larson competed in Computer Sciences with a project entitled, “The Outcome of the Numbers of Revolutions on Three Dimensional Digitally Animated Frames on the Final Video’s Length in Seconds.”

She was awarded second place, receiving a certificate and ribbon).

The presentations of these Odessa High School students demonstrated appropriate use of the scientific method.

Wehr has already secured a spot to present his project at the International Science Fair, and Boss has been awarded the same trip as a student observer for her scientific excellence.
