Lost and Found Pet Network volunteers help out county

June 2013 saw a larger than average number of lost or abandoned dogs in some areas within Lincoln County. While our numbers are still comparatively lower than surrounding counties, the need for a protocol became apparent. Through volunteer efforts, Lincoln County Lost & Found Pet Network was formed as a communications network, utilizing a Facebook account as a central clearinghouse in which to post lost or found animals, in hopes of reuniting owners with their lost pets. This is not a rescue facility, only volunteers willing to take time out of busy schedules to get the word out when an animal is in need. When a call is received through Lincoln County Sheriff’s Dispatch, the need is routed to a volunteer who posts the lost or found animal to the Facebook page. This last year has proven our protocol to be successful. While not all animals have been reunited with their owners, many have.

We hope to be able to keep a found animal near the area in which it was found. After ten days of advertising for the owners, if no owner comes forward within those ten days, the animal will then go through a wellness exam and vaccinations, and then be eligible for adoption through our networking and advertising.

Three of the dogs that came under our protocol last year went on to become service dogs for children, one at the Shiner’s Hospital in Seattle. Our plan is working, through tremendous community support and the efforts of our volunteers. If an individual is caught dumping or abandoning their animals in our county, they will be prosecuted.

The volunteer board members have applied for non-profit status, and have a donation account set up at any US Bank. Donations are greatly appreciated. Once we achieve non-profit status, donations will be tax exempt.
