Thorson Wehr returned from Houston, Texas, last week as he had been selected by the International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering and Environment Project Olympiad to present his science research, "Focusing Sound Waves Using a Two-Dimensional Non-linear System." Top high school researchers from all over the world displayed their innovative ideas at George R. Brown Convention Center of Houston. Over 500 participants shared their scientific ideas, experience, and knowledge to promote maintaining global sustainability in the near future.
The International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering and Environment Project Olympiad Committee exposed the participants and mentors to various events and activities including the Houston Natural Museum and the NASA Johnson Space Center during their stay. After two days of a grueling six hours of judging, Wehr was awarded a Bronze Medal (3rd Place) in the category of Engineering, a certificate, and a cash award. He also secured a $6,000 scholarship to North American University in Texas. Thor and teacher/father, Jeff Wehr, were very excited to earn this award among his newfound friends from Northern Ireland, Turkey, and Egypt to name a few. Thor made this comment regarding his ISWEEEP experience, "I'm so glad to represent Odessa once again at the International level and to do so well against very interesting science and engineering projects. I greatly enjoyed this experience and thank the Odessa School District for supporting our research laboratory." Thor is currently attending the International Science and Engineering Fair held this year in Los Angeles, and hopes to continue his Odessa High School and Advanced STEM Research prowess.
