Council, police appeal to citizens

The Odessa Town Council met Monday night to hear once again from the Odessa Police Department that there have been citizen complaints about wild animals causing damage to property and, in some cases, death to household pets within the town limits of Odessa. Both officers are appealing to the citizens of the town to not feed the feral cat population or leave pet food outdoors over night.

The wild population includes raccoons, skunks, and coyotes, and all are attracted by pet food left out by well-meaning citizens unaware of the negative consequences. Trapping and removing problem animals takes time away from other duties that the police could be performing. The wild population is also known to carry rabies and other diseases which can affect local pets.

In an unrelated matter, Chief Helen Coubra praised the quick thinking and action of Officer Bryce Peterson on a recent evening in Odessa. On patrol one evening, Peterson spotted an unfamiliar vehicle and called in the particulars on it. He found out that the vehicle owner/operator had outstanding felony warrants. Peterson waited for the man to exit the home he was visiting, asked him for identification and made the arrest.

The police also conducted an emphasis patrol in conjunction with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office to remind citizens to use seatbelts and not use cell phones while driving. Warnings were issued but no tickets.

Council approvals

Council approved the 6-year Transporation Improvement Program, several building permits, acceptance of the sole bid received for the surplused 2004 Chevy Impala (old police car) and the latest three-year contract with Consolidated Waste Disposal Systems of Ephrata. After accepting the definition of the road easements and reservation of airport rights of way, the council voted to surplus the parcel of land on which the Odessa Gun Club sits.
