Letter to the Editor; Business is not so good for some of us

To the Editor:

I knew a lady who got into a home business in 1995. She was very successful in Texas. Then her marriage ended, and she had to put her toy aside and go to work for real.

After two years, she became very sick and had to stop that job. While being at home full time, she got her toy out and started making things. While recovering, for two years she worked on and off. But she did good work and had at least two customers a month who were very happy with her skills.

Because her boyfriend of two years was getting married and not to her, she felt the need to move. She wanted to have a house again. She moved to a town, that had a quilt shop and quilt club. She tried to be friendly and fit into the club and the town. She worked hard, but could not get any repeat business. Then Lise got a quilting machine and then Susan, and there are four longarm machine quilters in Amira, too.

I do most of my work for free now or for a very low price. You may see it in the hospital quilt, called Card Trick that Sandy Smith is donating. The WA registered business name is Tomorrows’ Quilts.

I’ve had to get odd jobs since I have been here. Housekeeping is not my calling. The point of the story is that there is no business, and that is why I did not come forward to tell you about my business.

Karen Brooks,

Odessa
