George Heimbigner, Sr. has purchased the 320 acre farm of Jacob Heimbigner, his brother, for a consideration of $40 an acre, one of the best prices that has been paid for farm land.

Postmaster L.C. Weik has bought a Ford touring car and is navigating it, and local people are allowing him the right of way until he gets used to the car.

75 years ago

October 17, 1939

Hunting season opened and many bird and deer hunter were bagging their limits. Those who did not get out early in the season, however, found the going a bit tougher.

Two fellows got into trouble for not following the rules. “Frank Wraspir, Irby, and Alfred Luiten, Odessa, were fined $10 and costs by Justice F.B. Totusek on a charge of shooting from a railroad right-of-way. The men were arrested by Game Protector R.E. Beringer on Monday, near Irby.”

Voters were asked to support a bond issue to “acquire a playground, large enough to hold a track for pony races and rodeo facilities, with a soft field for football and baseball. The school purchased the necessary land for the field last year... as planned the school would have a turf playing field, with track, covered grandstand, toilet facilities, adequate parking areas, making it as nice as any athletic field in the area.”

October 15, 1964

Suchland Chevrolet celebrated 31 years in business at the same Odessa location. Harold Suchland began selling cars for the Odessa Trading Company beginning in 1931. He was the auto department manager for 20 years. After that, he spent three years as operator of the Big Bend Motor Company, in partnership with W.C. Raugust. The final eight years in business were spent under his own banner as Suchland Chevrolet, all at the same corner location downtown.

The Odessa Bowling alley under proprietor Jim Lewis had seven league teams in competition on various evenings.

October 12,1989

Future Farmers of America members attended a team tractor driving contest held in Yakima in conjunction with the Central Washington State Fair. Ryan Kuch and Colley Walter placed second in the event. Kuch had the third highest individual score out of 60 contestants.

The Odessa and Wilson Creek School Districts joined forces for two fall sports, with four boys joining the football squad and two girls joining the cross-country track team.
