Loose pets causing problems

Dogs and cats running loose in Odessa neighborhoods are a cause for concern among many of the town’s citizens. No one enjoys picking up animal droppings from their lawns, whether they themselves have a pet or not. But when non-resident pets leave their calling cards behind, the cleanup chore is especially aggravating.

The town has leash laws and licensing requirements. No animals should be running loose within the town limits. Not only do loose pets leave unsanitary conditions behind, they can also become a hazard to drivers and pedestrians alike.

We seem to have to put out this reminder about once a year, but we will say it again. When you walk your dog (always on a leash), take along an empty plastic bag with which to pick up the droppings from your animal (put your hand into the empty bag, use it like a glove to pick up the “nasty stuff,” then wrap it in the bag and throw it away at home).

Cats should be kept indoors or in special outdoor enclosures. That way they run less risk of catching various diseases from the feral cat population or of becoming dinner for a passing pack of coyotes. If you are a pet owner who considers your feline or canine friends to be part of your family, keep them safe and healthy by being responsible. And be considerate of your neighbors by picking up after your pets, should they wander next door to do their business, for example.

If you don’t consider those furry friends part of your family, why do you even have them?
