Katie and Josh Steward of Harrington learned about the opportunities and challenges facing cooperatives, agriculture and rural America as participants in the recent CHS New Leaders Forum sponsored by CHS Inc., the nation’s leading farmer-owned cooperative and a global energy, grains and foods company. The Stewards were among 165 young producers from across the U.S. participating in the early December program.
The Stewards represented AgVentures NW, Odessa, Wash., at the CHS New Leaders Forum, held in Minneapolis, Minn., in conjunction with the CHS Annual Meeting. All participants were nominated by their local cooperative or a producer organization.
During the three-day forum, participants heard from experts on agriculture and cooperatives, including: Carl Casale, president and CEO of CHS Inc .; Greg McKee, director of the Quentin Burdick Center for Cooperatives; Terry McClure, board member of Nationwide and president of McClure Farms LLC; and Ed Usset, grain marketing specialist at the University of Minnesota.
The New Leaders Forum also featured a networking event with the CHS Board of Directors, management and staff, as well as participation in the 2014 CHS Annual Meeting, including the annual meeting business session and dozens of agricultural-related education sessions.
