How to Recognize Suspicious Moles

It is again that time when the Odessa Clinic will be offering Free Skin Cancer Screenings! This will be the 8th year this service has been provided by the Odessa Clinic and the 3rd year for Brandon Lee, PA-C to offer this service.

Almost everyone has moles, the common name for nevi. We want to encourage people with moles to be looking for ones that are unusual or different from the other ones on their bodies. Sometimes they might be unequal in shape or have ragged, notched or blurred borders. Also, be looking for ones that are not uniform in color or may be black, shades of tan or even white. Most frequently, they appear on the upper back, torso, lower legs, head and neck.

Observing changes in your skin is the best way to detect early melanoma. Often it begins as a mottled, light brown to black flat blemish with irregular borders. Usually, the blemish will be at least one-quarter inch in size. It my turn shades of red, blue or white, crust on the surface and bleed. Remember you need to seek medical attention if you have a mole that is changing, a new mole or one that is different or ugly or begins to grow.

The Free Skin Cancer Screenings will be offered at the Odessa Clinic throughout February. Give us a call (509) 982-2614 for appointments with Brandon Lee, PA-C. Not only is the clinic offering the free visit with some literature on skin cancer, but they will also be giving away a free gift!
