Serving Lincoln County for more than a century!
Vacation Bible School is a long-standing tradition in Odessa. It is generally held during the first week or two of the summer break from public school. The Odessa Ministerial Association, comprising the pastors of all of the Odessa churches, has jointly put on VBS for area children up through junior-high age.
Pastor Jon Hayashi of Heritage Church, Pastor Bill Cox of the Foursquare Church, Pastor Mark Squire of the Zion Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Pastor Tim Hauge of Christ Lutheran Church and Father Kenny St. Hilaire of St. Joseph Catholic Church all contributed in some way to the effort, as did many adult and high-school-aged volunteers from all five churches.
This year's group was quite large, and as always was open to any child, resident or not, who wished to attend. The children learn Bible stories, make crafts, sing songs, and in the case of the older, junior-high group, put on skits relating Bible stories in a humorous way. Community members donated cookies that were provided as snacks and were very much enjoyed during break times.
The final program performed Thursday evening, June 18, showcased the singing of each combined class of children. After the singing and the skits, the entire group joined together for some final songs. Parents, grandparents, guardians, friends and community members brought chairs or blankets and found spots on the grass from which to watch the program.
The volunteer teachers were organized by Kaci King, who also directed the program, assisted by Pastors Hayashi, Squire and Cox. The other two, Hauge and St. Hilaire, were unable to attend.
