Odessa Record subscriber Larry Fisher of Spokane continues his series of articles on the history of the Batum/Lauer area where his wife, the former Joyce Kiesz, grew up.

Hi, here I am again.

Durland, Rebecca (Clary) (b. 7-05-1844 d. 3-07-1907) Mrs. A.F. Durland, an old and highly respected citizen of this place, passed the portals of death at her home on Fifth street yesterday morning at 3 o’clock. For several years Mrs. Durland has been in poor health but her condition was not thought serious until Monday and her sudden demise came as a great shock to her relatives and friends. She was born in Park County, IN., was married to Mr. Durland in Iowa Feb. 14, 1866, and at the time of her death had been his faithful helpmate for 41 years. Five children were born to bless the union—Mrs. G.W. Finney, D.H. and Ortho Durland, who reside here, Mrs. Alice Lowe of Palouse City and Mrs. Clara Post, now residing at LeRoi, IN. Mrs. Durland was a

woman of much strength of character, generous and sympathetic, and well loved by all who knew her.

Giese, Florence M. (Ramm) (b. 5-15-1920 d. 4-26-1993) She was born in Odessa, the daughter of Mary and Gottlieb Ramm, and grew up on a farm south of Odessa. She was graduated from Odessa High School and later received a nursing degree. She married Alfred

Giese on Feb 25, 1945. They lived on his farm until 1953 and then lived at various other locations while Alfred was employed at other farms. In 1971, they bought a home in Odessa. While living in Odessa, Florence was employed by various people and organizations. She also was custodian

for Christ Lutheran Church for several years. She served on the Lincoln County Election Board.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, having been baptized and confirmed there. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Albert, John, Elmer, Harold and Vernie; one sister, Martha. Her husband Alfred died in December of last year. She is survived by her brothers, Emil

Ramm and LeRoy Ramm, and one sister, Elsie Delzer, and n

umerous nieces and nephews.

Jeske, Justine (b. 1832 - d. 1912) Deceased was a native of Russia, but emigrated to America thirteen years ago, settling on a homestead southwest of Odessa. During the past few years she has made her home with her son, William, who owns a ranch southwest of this place. Two other sons, Andreas and Jacob, also reside here. (“Women” to be
