Veterans Day activities in Odessa

The 2015 Veterans Day dinner and continuous membership awards program were held November 11 in the social hall of Heritage Church in Odessa. Members of VFW Post #7395 and American Legion Post #105 organized the program and their auxiliary members cooked and served the turkey, potatoes, stuffing and gravy for the dinner. The side dishes and desserts were provided as potluck items donated by those who attended the dinner.

Departed comrades from the past year were remembered: Floyd Tebow who died December 2, 2014; Cecil Pfeifer May 13, 2015; Richard Miller June 22, 2015; Ray Quilici September 13, 2015 and William (Bill) Nixon September 24, 2015. Nixon had been the VFW post commander for the past 13 years.

Ryan Scrupps has been selected as the new post commander.

Active charter member (since May 1946) Robert Sewall was honored.

Continuous membership pins were awarded to Dale Jacobson for 10 years of membership; John Atkinson, Jerry Burghard and Joe Valenzuela for 15 years; Dellas Weber and John Hardt 30 years; Greg Binder and Jim Zimprich 35 years; Don Moeller and Laurence (Gunner) Smith 40 years and Ed Jasman 55 years.

Post membership is now down to 46 members.

On November 10, veterans were also honored by a school assembly and program held in the multipurpose room. Members of Cub Scout Pack #784 presented the colors, and Ryan Scrupps, a 2004 graduate of Odessa High School, was the guest speaker. He spoke of his time as a Marine stationed in Afghanistan.
