Varsity basketball teams get rocky start to season

The Odessa-Harrington boys and girls varsity basketball teams had a rough start to the season when they both suffered losses their first two games.

The first games on Friday were against Liberty. The boys team suffered a devastating 51 point loss and the girls team had a painful 22 point loss.

DeWulf’s dominate. In the games against Liberty, siblings John and Katie DeWulf both led their teams statistically. John DeWulf had a total of 13 points on six field goals, along with 12 rebounds and two blocked shots, followed by Jayd Jennings with seven points, and Lane Lobe with one. Ending with a final score of 21-72.

Katie DeWulf led the Lady Titans with 21 points, seven rebounds, and a 32% field goal percentage, followed by Amber Smith with 10 points, two steals and one rebound, and Casey Schlomer with three points, seven rebounds and three steals.

The girls played the entire fourth quarter with four or fewer players due to fouling out, running out of quarters they were allowed to play and an injury that sent one player to the hospital ER with a broken nose and mild concussion. The final score was 56-34.

On Saturday, both teams played Wilbur-Creston and both had losses, the boys with a final score of 71-34 and the girls 39-33.

The boys team was once again led by John Dewulf with 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots, followed by Jayd Jennings with 10 points, and Dylan Shockley with six.

For the girls, Amber Smith had 11 points, six rebounds, three steals and a blocked shot, followed by Katie DeWulf with eight points, seven rebounds, one assist, three steals and Lanessa Simon with seven points, nine rebounds, one steal and two blocked shots.

Next up, the Titans play the Davenport Gorillas on Tuesday December 8 with the girls JV team starting it off at 3 p.m. in Davenport.
