Holiday prep, Opera House elevator plans continuing

When Santa appeared earlier this month, some were disappointed that he was not accompanied with a white layer of snow, but there is now hope for a traditional white covering of the fields, where children can enjoy sledding and other outdoor activities that depend on snow. Many are excited with the Season’s activities and eyes glisten in the presence of a well-decorated tree. The Harrington Chamber of Commerce, on the other hand, focused on blessings, and worked with Harrington High School Honor Society students to bring large gift bags of food to 25 homes in Harrington containing ham, breads, fruits and vegetables, and even Ritz crackers. The ladies of St. Francis of Assisi donated poinsettias to accompany the food. The spirit of giving makes hearts merry, ah, yes, Merry Christmas.

Damage from the previous windstorm caused the former Harrington Haus to lose a portion of its newly repaired roof, which was ripped up to where it was visibly flapping with each gust of wind. Time has elapsed since the wind, and rain has fallen. That familiar sight of tin cans in the Harrington Haus catching raindrops was back. In spite of this, the beautiful painting by Luke Williams is continuing to be restored on the south wall. Work on the construction has been slow since the windstorm.

The Harrington Opera House continues to be the scene of scurrying activity with Sue Lani Madsen showing the structure to electrical and mechanical engineers and contractors for the elevator project. There were five plans for the direction of the ADA approach to the ticket booth. There appears little choice as to the location of the elevator and the second floor bathroom. Every view has potential in creating modern conveniences as well as liabilities for retaining the original mystique and character of the grand old Bank Block. As locals visit about the changes in the lobby, for instance, it never fails but what someone asks about photos of the interior of the bank area, the separate office rooms, the auditorium or the stage area. If readers are aware of photos of the interior of the Bank Block, please make them available to a member of Harrington Opera House Society or to The Odessa Record.
