Russell Thorson (80) died Saturday, December 19, 2015.
He was born October 8, 1935 to Milton and Evelyn Thorson on their farm in Lake Crystal, Minn.
Russell began painting with his father at age 12 and discovered he had a knack for it. He excelled as a marine painter. He restored a Deadliest Catch fishing vessel, was a member of the Tacoma Painter's Union Local #164 and started his own painting business. When he relocated to Odessa in 2002, his painting skills helped to rejuvenate many Odessa historical buildings, including the Foursquare Church, Heritage Church and Christ Lutheran Church.
His love for his wife Karol was rivaled only by his love for his pets. Russell was a self-proclaimed "cock-eyed optimist" and was well-known for his hospitality. He was generous with his possessions, time and love. Russell's smile was a reflection of his joyous, mischievous spirit and will be missed by those who knew and loved him.
Russell is survived by his wife of 16 years, Karol Thorson. Other survivors include his sister Judy Zumwalt; children Christine Thorson, Cynthia Thorson, Candace Iron Hawk and Scott Thorson; step-children Jennifer Wall, Christian Rapp, Adrian Rapp, Roshelle Taylor, Matthew Rapp; and 19 grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Thomas Thorson and sister Janet Wagenknecht. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 2, at the Sonrise Foursquare Church in Wilbur.
