Desert 100 'hole shot' winner

By TERRIE SCHMIDT-CROSBY

The latest running of the Desert 100 is now behind us, and by all accounts it was as successful as ever. For a very pleasant change, the weather cooperated with temperatures in the low 70s and very little wind. Vendors battled sunburn rather than windburn, but we heard no complaints.

Other than a few minor hiccups here and there, the event went smoothly for the Stumpjumper Motorcycle Club, whose members are now hard at work compiling the names and placement of the many riders involved in the various events. The hospitality tent provided by the Odessa Chamber of Commerce was well attended and much appreciated by the racers and their families. It provided shade and protection from the dust kicked up by riders. All ages were allowed in the tent to eat the food provided by the vendors outside, have a cold beverage and visit with friends and new acquaintances.

The shuttle bus from town to the race site was not available this year due to a lack of volunteer drivers. This was a disappointment to many Odessa youngsters who enjoy being in the thick of such events.

There were also times when more volunteers could have been put to work in the tent, had they been available. As always, the Stumpjumper members themselves and the racers from all over the northwest expressed much appreciation for the services provided to them by the Odessa community.

The program for this year’s race included a very nice article about Odessa, as well as plenty of pictures from past races. Several Odessa advertisers were also represented within the program.
