School district adopts new math curriculum

Adoption of a new math curriculum will be finalized this spring and will be implemented beginning next fall for children in kindergarten through eighth grade at P.C. Jantz Elementary School, said curriculum committee chair Bev Scherr. The teachers of math have worked diligently to identify a curriculum that is aligned with the Washington State Common Core Standards in math. They especially looked for one that has research and evidence supporting high student achievement, Scherr said.

Throughout the process, teachers used a vetting procedure that included doing research, communicating with colleagues who teach math and visiting or talking with teachers in districts that performed well on state math assessments. When appropriate, lessons were taught from the samples. A display has been set up on a table opposite the elementary school office for the public to preview and provide feedback. Community feedback is welcome. For more information, please feel free to talk with your child(ren)’s teacher.
