Deutschesfest: Not just for a few of us

It’s that time of year again. Certain people involved with Deutschesfest start getting that “deer in the headlights” look. Especially if they’re in charge of a venue, and are afraid that everything won’t be done in time.

Believe me, it doesn’t have to be that way. Sure, we’ll always need someone to be in charge, and they’ll probably always get a little stressed out. But we, as the community of Odessa, can do something about it. I’m inviting you to participate.

Biergarten work parties will be held every Wednesday night from 6 until 9 p.m., beginning this Wednesday and running right up to ‘Fest. Beverages will be provided for helpers, and we are inviting everyone who attends to bring a potluck dish. We want to put the party back in work party.

We have spent some time going through all the spaces in and around the Community Center, and have compiled a list of jobs that need to be done before we can call ourselves hosts for this historic event. When you arrive on Wednesday, there will be a list of items that need to be completed that evening. Just in case we are exceptionally efficient, the next week’s items will also be listed. Who knows, maybe we can get ahead!

Just in case you are new to the community, or have forgotten what Deutschesfest is all about, here’s a brief rundown: Deutschesfest, now in its 46th year, is the biggest fundraising event for the Odessa Chamber of Commerce. Proceeds from the event have funded everything from the community float to the community commercial kitchen. The Chamber is not the only group to benefit from the event. High School classes, FBLA and FFA, the Historical Society, various churches and civic organizations also are able to do some significant fundraising during this four-day event. As one friend said to me many years ago, “It would take a lot of bake sales” to do the same thing. In short, the entire community benefits from this event.

You don’t have to have a lot of skills to help out at the work parties. I plan on wearing comfortable clothes and bringing a pair of gardening gloves. If you own them and are proficient with them, electric or cordless drills/drivers might be helpful.

I look forward to seeing you there!
