Odessa students in grades three through eight represented the Town of Odessa very well in Ritzville at the 2016 Bi-County Academic Contest held November 16. The contest was attended by eight other Bi-County schools. The topics covered were Spelling, Math, Speeches and Geography. Of the 24 Odessa students who went on the trip, 14 placed in the top six of their category at the competition.
Dakota Steward took second place in Impromptu Speech. Hayden Schuh placed fifth in Persuasive Speech. KC Beldin took sixth place in Interpretive Speech, and Zachary Claassen was sixth in Spelling.
Ashlyn Neilsen took fourth place in Spelling, and Yvette Davey took fourth place in Persuasive Speech. Austin Iverson was fifth place in Geography, and Grace Nelson was fifth in Spelling. Kaytlyn Shafer placed sixth in Math, and Jocelyn Zigan placed sixth in Impromptu Speech.
Emily Scrupps was in first place in Impromptu Speech. Chloe Winkler took fifth place in Math. Daeton Deife won sixth place in Geography.
Jett Nelson landed a third place in Geography.
"Elementary teacher Maria Manley helped out and served as a chaperone. Several parents and school principal Jamie Nelson were able to come and root us on and serve as chaperones in the bleachers. The students were on their best behavior," said the Odessa team's coordinator Tim Larson.
