Moffet nets 2,000 points in HS career

Since starting for the Odessa High School boys basketball team as a freshman, Ryan Moffet, now a junior, has accumulated 2,000 points. Head basketball coach Larry Weber awarded Moffet a white basketball signed by all of his teammates to commemorate the event.

Moffet spoke to The Record this week about his love of basketball and his future plans. Having played Little League baseball in his younger years, he said he has concentrated only on basketball since about sixth grade. His reasons were that it was the sport he was best at. He said with conviction that he hates to lose and loves to win.

That competitive spirit also carries over to his future plans in life. He is contemplating the law as a future profession. In courtroom law at least, there are winners and losers and Moffet hates to lose. One of his favorite classes is Civics in which the students are encouraged to debate current issues, so he is also developing his ability to come up with arguments that will sway others to his way of thinking. He certainly sounds like a lawyer in the making.

Moffet is looking at attending the University of Texas, where he would be a Longhorn. He said he likes the size and sports-mindedness of Texas and would like to be a part of it.

At Odessa High, Moffet also participates in Knowledge Bowl, another competitive activity. At the same time, he is working in the weight room at school under the supervision of retired teacher Sam Read to build more muscle to improve his game against larger opponents. The battles under the boards can be brutal. Fortunately for Moffet and the OHS Tigers, he has the ability to make shots from almost anywhere on the court. Much of his scoring is from three-point range.

Coach Weber has said that he thinks Moffet could approach the 3,000-point mark by the time he completes his senior year. It has been a pleasure to watch him and his teammates and see them work together like the good friends that they all are.
