FP Publishing takes on O-Record

ODESSA — The Odessa Record is now part of the Free Press Publishing family.

Terrie Schmidt-Crosby, the previous owner since June of 2008, is staying on as editor of the publication. And Linda Goodman will remain the newspaper’s advertising representative.

Together, they join the Free Press Publishing group’s other publications, The Ritzville Adams County Journal, the Cheney Free Press, Davenport Times, Fairchild Extra, Spokane Valley News Herald and West Plains Extra.

“The addition of The Record is a natural fit for us,” Publisher Roger Harnack said Tuesday, noting staff from publications in Davenport, Ritzville and Odessa will work together to provide more in-depth coverage of agriculture, sports and regional issues.

“We are also striving to preserve the voice of our rural communities found only in local newspapers,” Harnack said.

The terms of the newspaper transaction were not made public.

Schmidt-Crosby is an Odessa native. She and her husband Ed Crosby purchased The Record in 2008 from the estate of the previous publisher Don Walter. Like herself, Walter was an Odessa native who returned to Odessa after careers in journalism and public relations had taken him to many other locales. The Crosby family moved to Odessa in 2002 after having lived in Germany and then Florida for over 30 years.

“It was a difficult decision to give up ownership of The Record,” said Schmidt-Crosby, “but with the economies of scale available at Free Press Publishing, we hope that we have kept the paper alive. We are also gratified that a local presence will continue in Odessa with our local office remaining open for our Odessa clientele.”
