Davenport spring sports canceled

WIAA shutters athletics after school year called off

DAVENPORT — High school sports in Davenport, Reardan and Harrington are the newest casualty of Gov. Jay Inslee’s “stay home, stay safe” quarantine.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association — the organization that helps organize sports and other activities, confirmed Monday that the school shutdown ordered Monday by the governor also includes all spring sports.

That means baseball, softball, track and field, golf, tennis and boys soccer are canceled for the 2020 spring season.

“This will include all regular season contests and practices, as well as all post-season tournaments and championship events,” the WIAA said in a letter clarifying the shutdown.

“The decision was undoubtedly a difficult one for Gov. Inslee.”

The organization said the decision was necessary to “keep the students and families of Washington safe.”

With the spring sports season offically canceled the organization will begin working with schools and athletic directors in preparation for the 2020-21 seasons.

“ The WIAA Executive Board and the WIAA staff feel for those students around the state that have had their seasons or careers cut short,” the organization said in its press release.

The cancelation does not affect non-affiliated sports.

However, several events have already been canceled.
