Athletic activities resume in Reardan

REARDAN – The Reardan School District kicked off their 2020-21 school year with all sport conditioning on Oct. 5. Specific sport conditioning begins next week.

The WIAA opened a second open coaching season from Sept. 28 to Nov. 30, where coaches can work on “sport specific” skills with athletes if the local department of health allows. The Lincoln County DOH approved the district’s plan Oct. 4.

Sports are broken up into four timelines. Practices for baseball, softball, track, tennis and cross country will run Oct. 12-Oct. 22. Oct. 26-Nov. 5, football, volleyball and girl’s soccer will practice. Nov. 16-30 will be basketball, wrestling and cheer. Another timeline from Nov. 9-12 is listed as “to be determined” in a release from the district.

“With so many of our athletes playing multiple sports, we want equal opportunity for all sports and decided on this plan,” the release stated.

Students who wish to play sports when competitions resumed aren’t required to participate in the open coaching session.

The all-sport conditioning ran an hour after school from 3-4 p.m., when all middle and high school athletes could participate in cardiorespiratory, muscular strength and flexibility training and exercises. No sport-specific equipment was used. This was also the time for athletes participating in sport-specific practices to turn in paperwork.

Strict safety guidelines are in place for the conditioning and practices. Athletes will be grouped in 10-1 ratios and separated from other groups. Athletes must wear clean workout clothes and bring their own water bottle and towels. Only five athletes are allowed to change in the locker room at a time, and they must have a bag with them to take out of the locker room. Athletes can’t change back into school clothes after practice in the locker room.

No equipment or contact between athletes will be shared. Athletes who aren’t on campus studying in-person on a practice day must do an attestation or bring a signed card. The locker room won’t be available to those students.

The district stressed that the plan is tentative and is subject to change at any time.
