Commissioners re-appoint weed board members
The Lincoln County Commissioners reappointed two members of the Lincoln County Weed Board last Monday, approving the members to serve another four-year term.
Donald Phillips was reappointed to Pos. 1 and Keith Nelson was reappointed to Pos. 5. Weed Board members work with weed board on how to address noxious weeds in the 2,317 square miles of Lincoln County.
The Lincoln County Weed Board has an annual budget of $269,000 with four staff. Weed board assessment rates vary from 9 to 13 cents an acre with a $15 minimum. Lincoln County Noxious Weed Board Coordinator Kevin Hupp said some noxious weeds on the board’s radar include Leafy Spurge, Canadian Thistle and Dalmatian Toadflax.
“We focus on protecting crops and pastures from these weeds and have had some success using biocontrol methods, like bugs that target certain weeds,” Hupp said. “We are seeing some awesome results in reduction of Leafy Spurge, for instance, by using biocontrols and new chemistries.”
