Cyberstalking hits Reardan

REARDAN – An argument over harassment on Facebook resulted in the arrest of a Reardan man who officials are charging with cyberstalking and resisting arrest.

Quintin J. Wright, 22, was booked into Lincoln County Jail on Nov. 3 on charges of cyberstalking and resisting arrest.

On Nov. 2, 18-year-old Aubrey J. Shuman contacted Reardan Police chief Andy Manke and informed him that Wright was harassing her on Facebook Messenger, police reports say. Records say that Shuman’s co-worker at the Reardan Store, 19-year-old Brittany J. Reese, had filed a cyberstalking complaint against Wright on Oct. 18.

Shuman reportedly messaged Wright to tell him to stop harassing Reese or he would be pepper sprayed. Wright then began to harass Shuman, prompting Shuman to call the police department, police reports state.

Police reports say Manke informed Shuman to message Wright and tell him to stop messaging her or he would file a complaint with the police. She did so, and blocked Wright from her Facebook account.

Wright then messaged Shuman again the next day from a different account, making claims that he wasn’t legally harassing her because she didn’t tell him to stop messaging her and that he wasn’t cyberstalking Reese, either, police reports state.

Shuman informed the police department, and Manke took a written statement from her that she indeed told Wright to stop messaging her and stop harassing Reese before receiving messages from him on a different account the next day, records state. Shuman said she was afraid that Wright would attack her at work or on her way home.

Manke then went to Wright’s residence in town, where he didn’t find anyone, records state. He then located Wright’s mother and asked her assistance in locating Wright. When returning to Wright’s residence, they found him in the basement, records say.

Manke questioned Wright about the exchanges with Shuman and informed him that he had messages from Shuman asking Wright to stop messaging him. Wright denied that Shuman told him to stop messaging her despite Manke telling him he had messages from Shuman’s phone indicating otherwise, records state.

Wright was then informed he was under arrest for cyberstalking, but he said “no, I am not under arrest,” records state. Manke then attempted to break Wright’s hand from a doorknob he had begun to grab to go back inside his residence. When Manke managed to rip his hand off the doorknob, Wright continued backing away from him, records say.

Manke then told Wright he would be tased if he continued to resist arrest. Wright then lifted up his sweatshirt and spun around, saying he was unarmed, he wasn’t going to jail and that he could resist a false arrest, police reports say.

When Wright spun, Manke applied his taser to Wright’s chest for five seconds. Wright then allowed Manke to take him into custody, police reports say.

Manke took Wright to the police department and showed him a copy of the message from Shuman’s phone telling him to stop messaging her or she’d call the police. He then transported Wright to Lincoln Hospital for medical clearing. Wright was then booked into Lincoln County Jail. The report has been forwarded to the Lincoln County Prosecutor for review and charging.
