Harrington Opera House offers "Zoom Room"

HARRINGTON – The Harrington Opera House is offering its online meeting space to community members who may need to attend online meetings for work or school during COVID-19 restrictions. A dedicated room in the opera house building has a large screen, a laptop and high-speed internet. The space, being referred to as the "Zoom Room", is being offered to the public by donation.

Opera House Technology Coordinator Karen Robertson said the opera house had originally set up the online option in anticipation that they may be able to host artists and then broadcast shows remotely during the coronavirus restrictions. However, the option turned out to be cost-prohibitive and it was anticipated the opera house may not get enough interest.

"People are already bombarded with doing things online and there are already so many opportunities," Robertson said. "It can cost as much as $400 to book a performer and it's hard to cover those costs with remote concerts."

In an effort to serve the community with its available technology, the opera house is offering its online meeting room to community members by reservation. Robertson said she hopes the option can help those who may not have access to high-speed internet and could even be a way for families to connect during the holidays.

"It could be fun to have a meeting with family online during the Thanksgiving or Christmas holidays," Robertson noted.

Building History

The Harrington Opera House opened on December 16, 1904, in Harrington with The Lady Minstrels to the "largest attendance in the history of Harrington", according to press reports. The building continued as a venue for local entertainment until mid-century. There were vaudeville acts, boxing matches, recitals, dances, school commencements, black minstrels, balls, and church services.

The auditorium could seat 350 (160 being reserved seats) but often 400 spectators were in attendance. The "large and roomy stage" contained two dressing rooms and a "toilet room."

Acetylene gas was used for lighting and a hot air furnace heated the auditorium.

In 1992, the Harrington Opera House Society was founded to preserve the Bank Block Building also known as "the old Opera House." Over $750,000 has been spent to rehabilitate and preserve the building. Completed projects include new sidewalks and handicap access, installation of high-speed internet the purchase of a Boston by Steinway grand piano and new grand stage curtains. Other improvements including a second-floor restroom and elevator have also been accomplished.

The opera house society has brought a variety of events to Harrington. From folk and Country to opera, from school chorus and bands to professional musicians and even a harp and vocal group from Edinburgh, Scotland.

Until the opera house can once again host performances, Robertson said they aim to support the community with the resources available.

"We look forward to being able to host live shows again but until then, we are here to help," she said.
