Rev. weighs in on giving thanks
We have once again arrived at the season called Thanksgiving. We have bought turkeys by the thousands and in countless homes this Thursday people will “Celebrate” Thanksgiving. Hopefully, most of the people will stop celebrating it long enough to offer it- THANKSGIVING that is.
Of course, a person must have someone to whom he can offer thanksgiving. It would be “too much” to say, “Thank you self”, or “I’ve been very good to me this year”. This is the season to recognize God and His bounty to us. In the fiftieth Psalm, God says to us that “The world is mine”. He is reminding us that that nice home, car, color TV, etc- all the possessions we are so proud of – belong to him. Just to think of this is to take some of the wind out of our sails. Anyone who doubts this has only to count the number of things he will take with him into eternity.
Psalm 50:14 says, “offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most high.” This was what the pilgrims had in mind on the first “Thanksgiving Day” in the Untied States. Even Webster tells us that thanksgiving is “a day set apart for giving thanks to God.” If we neglect to give thanks to God, then this day becomes just an excuse to fix a special dinner and get the day off from work. Throughout this day, let us keep in mind that this is not a day for “celebrating” but for Acknowledging God’s favor to us.
This Thanksgiving let us “Give Thanks to Whom Thanks is due”, Rev. Mike Jackson.

Moose Pays Davenport a Weekend Visit
Before the season’s first life-disrupting snowfall hit on Monday, the talk of Davenport centered on this moose that was spotted in neighborhoods along Maxwell and Adams streets before Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies helped the critter find its way out of the city limits. They got a picture of the visitor in a yard near fifth and Maxwell streets; the critter also enjoyed a romp on the Davenport’s football field, presumably admiring the construction of the new middle school nearby.
