Valentine's Day in Odessa to be low-key

ODESSA – According to Wikipedia, “Valentine's Day, also called Saint Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is celebrated annually on February 14. It originated as a minor Western Christian feast day honoring one or two early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine and, through later folk traditions, has become a significant cultural, religious and commercial celebration of romance and love in many regions of the world… Saint Valentine's Day is not a public holiday in any country, although it is an official feast day in the Anglican Communion and the Lutheran Church.”

The outlook for the day, this Sunday, in Odessa is fairly bleak. Chiefs Bar & Grill will be closed that day, as it normally is on Sundays. Those wanting flowers for their loved ones will have limited options locally, too. Sweet Pea’s Floral Design owner Kellie Luiten is recovering from surgery and unable to do flowers for the immediate future. Odessa Foods has had bouquets for sale last week and this week, but supplies are limited (and last week’s batch quickly sold out). Odessa Foods also has Valentine’s candy and gift items for sale. Odessa Drug has candy, cards and various gift items on display that are specifically related to Valentine’s Day.

So there are options available locally. Odessa folks can be creative at home if driving elsewhere doesn’t sound appealing in the current cold temperatures.
