Tiger Football
ODESSA – The Odessa Tiger football team started off their new season, finally, with a huge win over Wellpinit, 98-0. The boys were itching to get on the field and prove their mettle as the reigning state champions in the 1B category.
Senior Tim DeWulf was back in action after missing all of last season recovering from foot surgery. He proved his value with five pass receptions for 105 yards and four touchdowns. On defense, he racked up five solo tackles and two assists.
Fellow senior and quarterback Jett Nelson also had a great night, completing six of six pass attempts, four of them for TDs. On defense, he returned two punts for TDs and hauled in one interception.
Senior Pilot Weishaar rushed for 167 yards and made two TDs. Defensively, he had three solo tackles and two assists and also intercepted a pass attempt by the opposition.
Daeton Deife also intercepted a pass and contributed two solo tackles and one assist.
Two underclassmen, Gage Starkel and Joshua Valverde, each had four solo tackles to help shut out the Wellpinit offense.
Although the previously announced video feed never materialized (at least we were unable to find it), it was possible for fans to park outside the fence to watch the action. Parents of the Odessa players and of the seniors on the Wellpinit team were able to attend and sit in the grandstand, where they no doubt shivered in the cold. Now that temperatures have risen somewhat, future games should be more comfortable for them.
