Reardan school board approves bevy of new coaches, staff

REARDAN – The school board didn’t discuss or approve many groundbreaking or town-altering items at its Feb. 24 meeting, but the docket was full nonetheless.

The meeting included a presentation from mayor Gail Daniels, who highlighted the developing partnership between the town and school district. A part of that is the pathway that’s being developed from the school that will connect with the path heading to the baseball fields and the readerboard project that’s still in progress. She also mentioned her hopes to partner with ag students on landscaping projects in town.

The board approved the hiring of six new coaches, including Brian Scott (head high school girls soccer), Riley Klauss (assistant high school girls soccer), Jason Anderson (middle school assistant football and track), Jill Singleton (head middle school volleyball), Jen Colvin (assistant middle school volleyball) and Tyler Smedley (head high school cross country). The board also approved the hiring of para educator Jody Scott and facilities director James Porter.

Superintendent Eric Sobotta shared that the district is working on refining their hiring policy and procedure. He also noted that the district is beginning early preparations for what summer school may look like and is in the process of feeling out which staff are interested in assisting.

The board meeting included a student representative from the high school’s ASB group for the first time. This month, it was senior Aiden Kieffer, who said he hopes having a student representative at board meetings helps students get an inside look at school board happenings and increases communication between the board and students.

Elementary principal Dwight Cooper reported that individual MAP reports will be sent home with students March 4. He also congratulated Sarah Neumann on receiving a $200 grant from Spokane Area Retired Educators’ Association for a balsa wood bridge design and building project for fifth-graders.

High/middle school principal Deborah Newsum reported the district’s plans to bring high schoolers back in person four days a week on March 1. Middle schoolers returned in-person four days a week in late January and early February.
