Davenport falls to Asotin in football opener

ASOTIN – The first game of this truncated fall season didn’t go Davenport’s way last Friday. The Gorillas fell to Asotin 14-6 in a sloppy, defensive-minded road fest to open the 2021 “fall sports” docket.

Davenport’s lone score, a three-yard touchdown run by sophomore quarterback Evan Gunning, was set up on a 35-yard runback by senior Skyler Henry off a mishandled snap from Asotin punter Gavin Wood. Brenick Soliday’s extra point attempt was blocked.

Asotin held a slim lead at halftime 7-6, and added a second-half touchdown while shutting down the run-heavy Davenport attack.

Davenport often shot themselves in the foot, turning the ball over eight times. After Asotin extended its lead late in the fourth quarter to 14-6, the Gorillas had a chance to drive and tie the game, but Gunning was forced out of the pocket and was intercepted with just over two minutes remaining to seal the Panthers’ win.

Seniors Jack Gilmore and Jonah Goeckner scored rushing touchdowns for the victorious Panthers.

Davenport has eight days following the loss to prepare for the rival Reardan Indians coming to town March 6 at 1 p.m. Reardan pulled away from lowly Kettle Falls in its season opener 30-6.

After facing Reardan, Davenport has two more regular season games scheduled versus Northwest Christian and at Kettle Falls before the league postseason is scheduled to culminate in early April. The Gorillas stand in sixth place in the 2B league after week one, which would currently set up a fifth-place game matchup with Colfax. A win over Reardan would likely do Davenport wonders in shooting them up the league standings.
