ODESSA – Five inspiring students from the Odessa High School science department presented their independent science and engineering research at the Annual Eastern Washington Regional Science and Engineering Fair, held online March 10-11, 2021. Each completed the paperwork required, uploaded their video presentations and waited for the judges decisions. Although many of the special awards have not yet been released, these five scientists earned the following main regional awards:
Emily Scrupps – "Customized 3D Printing of Live Cells for Novel Bio-Circuitry"
- 1st Place Overall, Senior Division, Spokane, WA
- 1st Place Senior Division Award in the category Biomedical Engineering
- International Science & Engineering Fair Award, virtual, all across Earth
Chloe Winkler – "TiO2/UV Based Photocatalytic Pretreatment of Postharvest Canola Stalks for Cellulosic Ethanol Production"

Ashlyn Neilsen – "The Effectiveness of Kinesiology Tape on Stabilization of Muscle Groups"
- 1st Place Senior Division Award in the category Biomedical Health Sciences
Unfortunately for our Odessa students, once you receive a first-place award in your category, you are then in competition with all of the other first-place awardees regardless of category. These selected students vied for the overall gold, silver and bronze awards and the chance to attend the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). Sponsored in part by Regeneron, the ISEF hosts over 2,000 high school students from more than 80 countries, regions and territories. It is the largest pre-college science competition and will be held virtually this year with participants from across planet Earth on May 16-21, 2021.
As Emily Scrupps was selected as the finalist at the Eastern Washington Regional Science & Engineering Fair, she would normally prepare to attend the Regeneron ISEF. Because the participants who attend ISEF are from 70 different countries and travel restrictions due to Covid are still in place, this year's ISEF will be held virtually. Emily is very excited about earning a chance to attend ISEF and is excited to try speaking German to students attending from Germany! When asked about her ISEF selection, Emily said, "I was so excited to win the Regional Fair! I know how hard it is to win since we are up against all school districts, from our rural school up to 4A schools offering AP (Advanced Placement) and IB (International Baccalaureate) courses. But, honestly, it was my own friends in our ASR (Advanced Science Research) class that I was most worried about. Everyone did such great research. I knew I was competing against my friends!"
All of Odessa High School's ASR Laboratory researchers now prepare for the State Science Fair to be held in Bremerton, Wash., March 26-27, 2021 at the 64th annual, but virtual, Washington State Science and Engineering Fair.
