Small team, big results

ODESSA – After two meets, the Odessa High School girls and boys track and field teams have shown much promise despite having only nine members combined on its rosters. Head coach Travis Schuh said he was pleasantly surprised at how well some of them were performing right out of the starting gate.

The Valley Christian Jamboree was held in Spokane Valley on March 25, where the host team took the top spots with both of their teams. The Odessa boys finished fifth, and the Odessa girls finished tenth. For the girls, freshman Hayden Schuh showed she will be someone to watch as she placed first in the 100 meters and second in the 300-meter hurdles. For the boys, Pilot Weishaar is ending his senior year with a bang, finishing first in both the 100 and 200 meters. In the 100 m, Weishaar tied with Jesse Beauchamp of Republic at 12.3 seconds, a personal record for both. Odessa sophomore Anthony Elder came in third in the 100m at 12.4 seconds and was third in the shot put as well. Freshman Christian Anderson placed 11th in the 100m and also ran the 200m and placed fifth.

On March 31, a District 7/9 meet was held in Pomeroy. As a team, the girls placed fourth and the boys seventh. For the girls, sophomore Ashlyn Neilsen and freshman Mya Ford joined Schuh in the team’s standings. Neilsen took first in the high jump, third in the 400m and fourth in the triple jump. Ford entered three field events, the shot put, discus and javelin, with a seventh place in the javelin as her best finish. Schuh garnered a first place in the 300-meter hurdles and second-place finishes in the 200-meter sprint, the 100-meter hurdles and the long jump.

David Hayashi and David Strode joined their three teammates in placing at this meet. Hayashi finished second in both the triple jump and long jump with season records in both events. Weishaar took first in the 200m and third in the pole vault, and Elder finished second in the 100m and third in the shot put.
