Majority of students prefer quarter system
DAVENPORT – To adjust for strange schedules caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the middle and high school here have been utilizing a quarter system, as opposed to a regular, seven-period day. A recent survey conducted among students indicated that a majority prefer a possible future quarter system where there are just three to four classes taken at a time split throughout the year, principal Chad Prewitt shared with the school board at the board’s April 26 meeting.
Only seventh-graders favored a normal, seven-period return to normal as a majority amongst their grade. Seniors were split 50-50. The majority in all other grades showed interest in a quarters-only system.
Superintendent Jim Kowalkowski shared that the school’s rapid COVID-19 testing program has blossomed in the past month on the heels of a recent school breakout. 295 total tests have been given, with 27 netting positive results-some of which were parents and family members. 113 were given this month.
Business manager Leslie Oliver reported that basic enrollment increased by one and special education enrollment decreased by one in the district this month. The district is under budget by 7.65 for full-time equivalent and over budget by 3.71 for special education.
Oliver added that the board needed to approve a resolution to allow her and Kowalkowski to sign contracts for FEMA funds and claim reimbursement. That FEMA grant totaled $78,042, which the district has spent in full.
The board approved that resolution, as well as the approval of the format for department presentations coming up in May, a combine agreement for two students to join the Wilbur-Creston baseball team and a procedure for school meals for students with special needs.
The consent agenda was approved at the beginning of the meeting and included the OK for the district to make the following hires: Boys and girls track second assistant coach Mike Jacoby, junior high softball assistant coach Sydney Abbott, special education/behavior specialist/interventionist Tyson Linstrum, special education teacher Lindsey Wynecoop and Spanish/secondary teacher Stephanie Thorson.
