City council okays hiring two reserve officers

REARDAN – Council approved a request of police chief Andy Manke to begin the hiring process of two new reserve officers at its May 6 regular meeting. Manke is eligible to retire near the end of 2022.

Candidates are not set in stone yet, but council’s motion allows the police department to begin the process of hiring new law enforcement reserve officers for when Manke steps away. The unanimously approved motion was council’s only official action taken.

During the public comment section, a roughly 20-minute discussion between Mike Case and council addressed a nuisance enforcement letter he received regarding debris and garbage on his property on the 100 block of North Central Street. Much of the debris is wood, which Case claimed is for burning, and his enforcement isn’t considered essential work while the country is still in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Council asked for a hard date on when Case would have his property cleaned up, and Case proposed Sept. 1. Mayor Gail Daniels countered with a July 1 date, which council agreed to. Additionally, Case mentioned a separate request for a building proposal on his property, but councilmember Clay Soliday said he wanted to see progress on Case’s clean-up before considering the proposal.

During council discussion, councilmember Celeste Lewis requested the city of Davenport’s annexation ordinances, while council wanted the town to look into how many water and sewer connections are available for future building. Additionally, Daniels mentioned that the planning commission needs new members.

Council next convenes May 20.
