Slack heading to FBLA national competition

Qualifies in three events, will compete in one

HARRINGTON - Caroline Slack, a junior at the high school here, has enjoyed the FBLA experience she's been a part of all three years thus far, but she never expected to qualify for national competitions by her junior year.

But she didn't just qualify for nationals in one event at the state competition.

She qualified for three.

"I did not expect to place that high at state as a junior," Slack said. "That's crazy."

Due to FBLA rules, she must choose one to compete in. She chose her best event, Word processing, a competition that measures proficiency in Microsoft Word and use of the program commonplace in the business world.

Slack finished in fourth place in the event that features an objective test about the workings of Word.

She also finished fifth in the job interview competition and seventh in the journalism competition. Additionally, Slack competed in business communications.

"It was really surprising (to place that high in three competitions)," Slack said. "I was like, 'omg, another one?' Then you get a third (top finish), and you're like, 'are you kidding me right now? That's crazy.'"

The national competition will take place virtually for the second straight year. It runs June 29-July 2.

"It'll be a test of production," Harrington FBLA adviser Sharon Kruger said. "She'll have to get as much done as possible in the allotted time."

Slack hopes her success will inspire more students at the high school to get involved in FBLA.

"Sharon is an amazing adviser, and I've gotten to do a lot of cool fundraisers," Slack said. "I just wish we had more kids that want to do FBLA."
