Odessa town council cancels recycling contract

ODESSA – The May 10 meeting of the Odessa Town Council met in the community center was chaired by Mayor Bill Crossley and attended by the full council (Vickie Iverson, Landon Lobe, Kelly Watkins, Amy Hunt, Marlene Kramer).

The council voted unanimously to cancel the recycling contract with Lincoln County, citing the expense involved in the program. The town must give one month’s notice to the county, so the cancellation will take effect in about the second week of June.

Also approved was Resolution 2021-03 for a loan from the Department of Ecology for replacement of the sewer station lift station. Ordinance #718 was also approved for the council’s bond for the USDA water loan for $499,000.

Two building permits were also approved. Council members commented that far too many building permits are being requested after the fences, reroofs, etc. have already been completed. It was suggested that reminders be posted that permits are to be approved prior to installation/construction.

In his police report, Marshal Jimerson handled eight speeding stops, two equipment violations and one parking violation. Also reported were one suspicious person, one suspicious vehicle and two civil matters. There was on request for a welfare check and one request for medical assistance.

Public Works Director Rod Webster reported that water valves will be exercised in the coming days, which may cause dirty water to homes. He suggested that homeowners run outdoor faucets for a few minutes in order to clear the water lines.

The mayor reported that he, along with Rod and Anthony of the public works crew and Steve Nelson of CenturyWest Engineering went over the 6-Year Transportation Improvement Plan and updated it with regard to projects currently underway.

The next regular council meeting is at 7 p.m. May 24 in the community center.
