Local fire districts enjoy quiet weekend

DAVENPORT – The burn and fireworks bans instituted by fire districts across Lincoln County over the Fourth of July holiday weekend appear to have done the trick in preventing catastrophic fires, as no firework-related fires were reported or required response in the greater Davenport/Harrington/Reardan area.

Fire District No. 5, which covers the Davenport area, had no fires to respond to last weekend in city limits or district wide.

“My phone was quiet,” District No. 5 chief Craig Sweet said. “Compared to what it could’ve been, I have to say it was a rather mild weekend.”

Firework bans were instituted as record-high temperatures led into Independence Day weekend. When combined with one of the driest years in recent memory and high winds affecting the county all year, fire authorities had cause for serious fire concern.

Burn bans remain in effect here.

Similarly, no calls for service related to fireworks or firework-caused flames were made in Fire District No. 4, which covers the Reardan/Edwall area.

“We had no calls over the weekend, which was really nice as dry as it was,” District No. 4 chief Ryan Rettkowski said.

Authorities in Fire District No. 6, which includes the Harrington area, had to warn a few people and saw one burn ban violation. Otherwise, that area likewise enjoyed a quiet holiday weekend.

“Most people respected it. Our staffing levels went down a little bit…so it was good that we didn’t have any fires,” District No. 6 commissioner Ron Mielke said. “I was pleased most people respected the ban.”

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office received two firework-related calls July 2, but none July 3, according to this week’s media report. July 4 numbers will be updated in next week’s media report.
