Colville man named All-Around Cowboy

Area riders, ropers fall short in Cheney Rodeo

CHENEY – A Colville man was named All-Around Cowboy after taking home the most money from the three-day Cheney Rodeo.

Travis James Eller, took home $2,058 after competing in tie-down roping and team roping, according to Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association standings.

A total $46,760 purse was paid to top Cheney Rodeo competitors.

In team roping, he and partner Brett Hale of Tenino tied for third-place with 7.8 seconds for their Saturday night ride.

Eller also took fourth in tie-down roping with a time of 12.8 seconds.

While Eller was posting good times in roping, another Colville resident was busy setting a Cheney Rodeo Arena breakaway roping record.

Amanda Hodges, who hails from Brazoria, Texas, but now lives in Colville, set the new arena breakaway record at 2.2 seconds to win that event.

She broke the record set the day before at 2.3 seconds by Kaycee Hollingback of Wilburton, Okla. Hollingback's time was tied again Sunday by Jordan Minor, a cowgirl from Hermiston, Ore.

The PRCA didn't report official times and cash payouts for breakaway.

Several local competitors were among the cowboys and cowgirls competing in the rodeo.

Spangle's Cory Perryman entered all three days of bull riding, but couldn't get a qualified ride of at least 8 seconds.

He wasn't alone, as none of the bull riders qualified on the C5 Rodeo of Lac la Biche, Alberta, Canada roughstock.

Ty Schlect of Cheney partnered with Justin Solomon of Spokane Valley in team roping. They got their shot Sunday, but didn't get their mark and ended up with no time.

Schlect works in the city of Cheney Public Works Department.

Cooper Mills of St. John also found a partner for team roping. Riding Friday night, he and partner Turk Bates of Prosser also missed and didn't get a time, as did the team of Bobby Winn of Reardan and Travis Lowrey of Newport.

Mills was also among the tie-down competitors.

He roped his calf quickly, but it didn't stay tied up the minimum 6 seconds necessary to get a time.

In barrel racing, Pamela Coker of Cheney post a time of 18.52 seconds, which put her 18th overall among a field of 30 riders.

Further down the list, Karla Gust of Ritzville completed the barrels cloverleaf in 28.13 seconds to finish 29.

In breakaway roping, Medical Lake's Cheyanne Gleave rode fifth during the Friday night performance, but she didn't get a time.

Local fans also had multiple opportunities to participate.

Rodeo clown and barrelman Tate Rhoads of Montana called area children into the arena during each of the three performances for his "balloon stampede."

He had the child lay down and roll around in the dirt before having them race down the arena to burst balloons to win money and gift certificates.

He also instructed them to put two handfuls of arena dirt in their pockets to take home as souvenirs.

On Saturday night, Rhoads called out about two dozen moms.

Once in the arena, the mothers were instructed to take off one shoe or boot and put it in a pile. Rhoads then led them down the arena to line up, run to the center of the arena and don their missing footwear, then give him a high-five.

When the moms approached, he ran, eventually being tackled and his hand tagged.
