Second broadband project application approved

DAVENPORT—The Lincoln County Commissioners approved two resolutions aimed at applying for a broadband construction project with the Public Works Board. The application would request federal funding on a non-matching basis for fiber broadband in Odessa, Harrington, Reardan and possibly the Hawk Creek area. Those resolutions were approved at the commissioner’s Sept. 20 meeting.

Commissioner Scott Hutsell said the board doesn’t know yet how much the application will be requesting in grant funding, as county partner Petrichor is still looking into those dollars.

The project is the second of three broadband ventures the county hopes to fund. The first, which the county received funding for earlier this year, was for Almira to Wilbur to Harrington. The third would be state broadband funding inside Davenport that the county would need to match.

The first resolution passed by the commissioners was approving the application, while the second approved Economic Development Council director Janice Jantz’s preparer’s certification for the application.

The commissioners also approved a re-appointment of the alcohol/drug center advisory board. That board includes Kelly Watkins, Joy Wilken, Tina Brown, Paul McArthur and Carolyn Moldrem.

While going through old files, the county auditor’s office found that now-deceased, former chief civil deputy Kathy Wilcox’s commission was never officially revoked when she passed in Sept. 2020, so the commissioners officially made that motion.

The commissioners also approved a renewal application for I502 Cannabis in Creston.

Several payroll changes were approved. The resignations of Michael Chipman, Loren Reinbold, Britney Van Winkle, Steven Walker, Anastasia Brandenburg, Riley Chrisman, Gavin Debord, Jason Furman, Jonathan Regan, Sarah Sweetser and Laurel Victor were approved, as were the hires of Nicole Schmidt and the temporary hires and discharges of Bonnie Schneider and Portia Seidel. The commissioners also approved fund changes for Scott Blomgren, Anna Bocook, Matthew Chalmers, Cody Gyllenskog, Lyle Hendrickson, Dave Husky, Zenda Jaeger, Cydnee Kieffer and Brad Sweet.

The board of commissioners recessed their meeting to Monday, Sept. 27 in anticipation of another round of negotiations between the county and Teamsters 690, which represents the sheriff’s office’s commissioned and non-commissioned officers.
